Abstract Scope Solidification end reduction technology have mainly been used to improve porosity and segregation of large-section continuously cast blooms or slabs, which increased the risk of crack initiation and propagation at the same time due to improper reduction amount and improper reduction zone. Based on the mechanism of intermediate crack initiation and surface corner crack propagation during reduction process, a high-temperature tensile method was designed to determine the critical strain of two kinds of cracks. The thermal and mechanical behavior of wide-thick continuous casting slab was analyzed by a three-dimensional (3D) thermomechanical finite element model and combining the critical criterion and strain distribution, an crack risk prediction model was presented, and the crack risk contour plot with different solidification end reduction conditions was simulated to quantitatively design the reasonable reduction strategy.
