Abstract Scope |
In this work, the precipitation behaviour of Al-Cu-Li alloys with and without Sc and Zr during ageing at 160°C has been investigated. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) was used to characterise the formation of precipitates during the ageing treatment. The STEM results show that θ^' (Al2Cu) precipitates form at the early stage of ageing in both alloys, with T1 (Al2CuLi) precipitates forming gradually with ageing time. In the alloy with Sc and Zr, the θ^' and T1 precipitates are finer and denser. High-resolution TEM reveals that this is attributed to the formation of Al3(Sc, Zr) dispersoids in the Sc and Zr containing alloy. These Al3(Sc, Zr) dispersoids act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for the precipitation of θ^' and T1. Atom probe tomography (APT) was carried out to analyse the compositions of θ^' and T1. The strengthening contributions from Al3(Sc, Zr) dispersoids, θ^' and T1 are discussed. |
