Abstract Scope Porous copper having bimodal pore distribution has been fabricated via space holder approach utilizing the powder metallurgy technique. A mixture of K2CO3 and NaCl in the ratio of 1:2 by volume, have been used as space holders and the initial compaction pressure for the green body fabrication was varied methodically between 120 and 180 MPa. A study was conducted to examine the impact of the applied compaction pressure on the porosity, volume shrinkage, pore morphology and longitudinal elastic constants of the fabricated samples. Non-destructive ultrasound phase spectroscopy technique has been employed to measure the longitudinal elastic constants along the three orthogonal directions, which shows that the fabricated samples are transverse isotropic in nature. The average elastic anisotropy of the samples was found to increase from 0.29 to 0.59, when the applied pressure was initially increased from 120 to 160 MPa, but decreased to 0.55 when the pressure was 180 MPa.
