Abstract Scope |
The deformation behavior and microstructural evolution of heterogeneous-nano (HN) structured SUS316LN austenitic stainless steel were investigated during tensile tests at cryogenic temperature (77 K). The HN structured steel exhibited an abnormal strength–ductility balance of 2.2 GPa ultimate tensile strength and 55% total elongation to fracture. Notable Lüders-type necking deformation initiated at the early stage of plastic deformation and expanded to the entire gauge section, accompanied by deformation-induced martensitic transformation. Therefore, the excellent mechanical properties of the HN structured steel at the cryogenic temperature were ascribed to the significant work hardening caused by transformation-induced plasticity. |
