Introduction:
Aluminum alloys are desirable for their low density for use in aerospace applications. The use of these alloys in wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is limited due to high solidification cracking susceptibility when welded. Cracking is mitigated through the addition of inoculating agents, often coined nanoparticles, that provide heterogeneous nucleation sites to encourage equiaxed solidification and facilitate crack healing during solidification. This experiment evaluates inoculated 6061 wire for use in gas metal arc-based additive manufacturing. Build parameters were optimized for build geometry and porosity reduction, and experiments were performed to understand how waveforms and heat treatments impact this alloy.
Experimental Procedure:
An OTC robotic gas metal arc (GMAW) was used in parameter development and building. Welds were made with pulse and reciprocating wire feed waveforms. A single pass wall was made with each waveform and a T6 heat treatment was applied to half of each build. The builds were sectioned and characterized using optical microscopy. Further testing will include SEM with electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), tensile data, and microhardness maps for each waveform and heat treatment condition.
Results and Discussion:
We intend to evaluate how different waveforms and heat treatments impact the deposited hardness, porosity, grain size, and morphology of the builds. Tensile testing will give insight into how these factors impact mechanical properties.
Experimentation is ongoing and data will be compiled through this summer. |
