Abstract Scope |
Both atomistic and mesoscale simulations have been used extensively to develop fundamental understandings of deformation mechanisms and structure-property relationship in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). In this study, we extract the key parameters of STZs, including their size, number of shear modes, eigenstrain, and most importantly, the activation energy barrier spectrum as a function of cooling history and strain rate, from MD simulations and incorporate them into a spatially randomized STZ model with a kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm to study the deformation behavior and mechanical properties of BMGs. The simulation results offer important insights into the effects of cooling rate and strain rate on the softening and deformation behavior of BMGs, i.e., the lower the cooling rate during glass preparation or the higher the strain rate during deformation, the higher their yield strength and the lower their ductility. |
