Symposium Electrification of Iron and Steel
Presentation Title Challenges and Opportunities for Electrification of the Ironmaking Process
Author(s) Brett Spigarelli, Matt Mlinar
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Brett Spigarelli
Abstract Scope The traditional ironmaking process – beneficiation, pelletizing, coking, sintering, and blast furnace ironmaking - is fossil fuel intensive, resulting in roughly two tonnes CO2 per tonne of iron. This has led to significant research efforts to decarbonize the ironmaking industry. This presentation will explore the current state of the art research efforts aimed at decarbonizing the ironmaking industry through electrification. The opportunities and challenges associated with electrification at each stage of the ironmaking process will be presented.
