Abstract Scope |
This study investigated damage propagation behavior of plain woven CFRP, using both experimental and numerical methods. Damage propagation behavior was observed during cyclic loading test. Progressive damage analysis was carried out by reflecting results of experimental damage observation. Since woven CFRP has complex microstructure, assessment of damage progress under fatigue loading is difficult, only using experimental method. Then efficient numerical method for predicting fatigue damage propagation of woven CFRP is demanded. At experimental approach in this study, tensile-tensile fatigue test was carried out. Then damage caused by cyclic load was observed by optical microscope and replica method. As a consequence, matrix crack, transverse crack and interface debonding between fiber bundle and matrix were observed. At numerical approach, two-scale analysis method was adopted to consider detailed textile structure. At microscopic scale, a model consisting of matrix and dozens of carbon fibers was considered. We modeled matrix crack and interface debonding between fiber and matrix. Then tensile-tensile fatigue analysis was carried out and results of damage behavior and stiffness degradation were reflected to mesoscopic analysis. At mesoscopic scale, we modeled representative unit cell (RUC) of plain woven structure. Damages observed at fatigue test were considered. We identified transverse crack occurrence and propagation from results of microscopic analysis. Then fatigue analysis was carried out and proposed numerical method was validated by comparing damage propagation behavior of mesoscopic scale to experimental damage observation. |
