Abstract Scope |
Titanium alloys can crystallize in a low-temperature α phase (HCP) and in a high-temperature β phase (BCC). We focus on metastable β-titanium alloys, in which the so-called β-stabilizing elements, e.g., Mo, decrease the transformation temperature between α and β phases and the high-temperature β phase can be retained at room temperature after quenching. Furthermore, a metastable ω phase (hexagonal structure) often forms in metastable β-Ti alloys.
We studied binary titanium alloys with different molybdenum content (12, 15, 18 wt %) and chemically graded alloys with discrete values of molybdenum content (9 – 21 wt %). Several experimental methods were used, including techniques measured in situ during linear heating: dilatometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and resistometry. Additionally, ex situ experiments after annealing were performed: microhardness measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The combination of these methods provided a detailed insight into phase transformations in metastable β-Ti alloys. |
