Abstract Scope |
Micromechanical deformation mechanisms are unraveled in ferrite-pearlite steels by high-resolution microstructure mapping and nanoscale strain measurements. High-resolution SEM-DIC is employed to unravel strain localization at the scale of ferrite and pearlite grains/colonies, and ferrite and cementite lamellae, all the way up to damage initiation and evolution. Interesting insights are obtained on ferrite-cementite interface deformation, ferrite-pearlite near-interface damage, and highly plastic versus relatively brittle behavior of cementite. Notably, the strain fields are tightly correlated to the undeformed and deformed microstructure, such that the evolution from plasticity to damage can be observed at high spatial resolution. The ability to resolve plastic strains at the scale of individual ferrite/cementite lamellae allows for the tracking of strain paths and damage through pearlite colonies. Under increasing deformation, localization bands can protrude pearltie colonies along lamellar directions in the ferrite, while individual cementite lamellae blocking these paths will plastically deform to give way to the strain path, often cracking at some point. Alternatively, when many cementite lamellae block strain paths, deformation will increase in a diffuse manner. |
