Thermally stable Pt-based nanocrystalline alloy coatings are promising candidates for electrical contact materials with improved friction/wear. Pt-Au coatings have been shown to form super-lubricious carbon-based surface films (µ < 0.05) from adventitious carbon when operated in inert environments. Pt-rich coatings (> 90 at. % Pt) have been studied showing relationships between composition and hardness on the mechano-chemical response. In this work, Pt-Au combinatorial libraries made via physical vapor deposition are assessed using a novel semi-autonomous friction/wear testing apparatus (tribometer). We highlight the mechano-chemical response of 448 Pt-Au coatings spanning ~0-100 at. % Pt and correlations with hardness, composition, and density. This study demonstrates how ~1000 unique tests can be performed a few days allowing for the generation of large multi-modal experimental data sets suitable for machine learning models that can aide in the discovery of novel material solutions. SNL is managed and operated by NTESS under DOE NNSA contract DE-NA0003525. |
