Abstract Scope |
Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) have played a significant role in various fields of industry. One of the most intensively studied groups of MMC are aluminium matrix composites due to the combination of low density and high specific stiffness, along with high specific strength and high temperature stability. Among several strengthening mechanisms of Al/TiC composites like Orowan and load transfer strengthening, mismatch in thermal expansion and elastic modulus coefficients of TiC and Al, a grain refinement by TiC particles play one of important role due to the Hall-Patch relation. In this paper we present mechanism of even stronger grain refinement which is related to the phenomenon of engulfment and pushing of nanoparticles by solidifying interface during in-situ cast of Al/TiC composite as well as with Al-Ti phase diagram, chemical composition and lattice mismatch of constituent phases. The results are based on the advanced TEM, EBSD microstructure studies and synchrotron radiation diffraction. |
