Abstract Scope |
Bimetallic tubes are used when a component requires more than one performance requirement, for instance, strength/creep resistance and oxidation/corrosion resistance. Shear-assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE) has been successfully employed in producing cladded tubes consisting of 6061 and 7075 Al, 7075 and 1100 Al, Cu/Cu-Nb and Ni, and Zircaloy-4 and Ni alloys. The integrity of the tubes were analyzed using light and electron microscopy, and micro-CT. Void-free bimetallic tubes were produced using ShAPE. The interface between Cu/Cu-Nb and Ni layers was characterized in detail using transmission electron microscopy and nano-indentation. Hardness and tensile property analysis were used quantify the structural integrity of the cladded tubes. Key insights such as material flow during the bimetallic tube extrusion were obtained from the characterization of remnant billets and simulation results from a smoothed particle hydrodynamics model. |
