Abstract Scope |
The new glass composition was successfully developed to improve impact resistance of ultrathin glass (UTG) for the cover window of foldable devices. We investigated various glass families considering brittleness, hardness, thermal expansion, viscosity and toughness for higher impact resistance with equivalent foldabilities of commercial UTG. We newly formulated and suggested the figure of merits (FOM) in terms of fracture energy, elastic energy and free volume based on the pen drop results of laboratory samples, and were related to the resistance at the moment of impact. Based on the FOM and pen drop performances, we confirmed that the R-square value was 0.82. The pen drop height at the fracture increased by more than 100% compared to the commercial UTG. Finally, we suggested a final FOM including cooling rate effects during mass production that also has a great role on impact resistance, which could be effectively employed in designing the impact-resistant glasses. |
