Abstract Scope |
To secure the supply chain for the production of permanent magnets, recycling REEs from secondary sources, specifically end-of-life permanent magnets, has become a crucial area of research. The hydrometallurgical processing route has been determined as the best option allowing elemental separation of the magnet components. Unfortunately, the electronegative metals in the magnets and fine particle size distribution of the shredded magnets result in highly exothermic and uncontrollable reactions with significant hydrogen gas evolution. Therefore, this study presents an alternative processing method that replaces the mineral acids with a metal salt solution having higher reduction potential while cementing the metal during the leaching process. Various metal salts are tested and investigated to enhance efficiency while eliminating the problems during conventional processing and considering the minimal environmental impact. The cemented metal is recycled during the process achieving a sustainable and environmentally friendly hydrometallurgical process for REE bearing permanent magnets. |
