Abstract Scope |
Dental caries is among the most prevalent chronic infectious disease in the oral cavity through early childhood to older age. The complex bacteriological etiology requires the use of antibiotics to treat dental caries and other oral diseases, however systemic antibiotics that are currently used are not designed specific to oral diseases. Besides, the use of antibiotics cannot address the demineralization happening due to the caries. In the presence of the biofilm formations, overuse of antibiotics brings another concern on bacterial resistance. Our group has been investing into biomolecules as a versatile tool to couple biological activity to dental materials to prevent dental and oral diseases. We developed antimicrobial peptides that are targeting oral cariogenic bacteria as polymer hybrids and studied their bioactivity and polymerization properties in the collagen platform mimicking oral environment. Our studies extend to including different dental matrix formulations and provide different bio-hybrid function property relations. |
