Abstract Scope |
Binder jetting is a promising additive manufacturing technique capable of producing complex shapes with minimal residual stresses and isotropic properties. This study aims to investigate the effects of printing parameters (layer thickness, print bed temperature, binder setting time, and binder saturation) and sintering conditions (temperature and time) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of binder jetted M2 tool steel. Powder sizes of 5 µm and 10 µm were used. Optimal sintering parameters were obtained for high hardness, high compressive strength, and low coefficient of friction. The effect of sintering time on grain growth, hardness, and wear resistance was also analyzed. Microstructural investigations revealing the formation of MC and M6C carbides leading to enhanced mechanical properties were performed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The formation of vanadium carbide during sintering was also observed which improved wear resistance by acting as a solid lubricant during wear. |
