Abstract Scope |
Ag-Cu-Se is an important ternary material system with promising applications in thermoelectrics. For phase diagram determinations, Ag-Cu-Se alloys were prepared and annealed at 500℃ and 300℃. Whiskers are observed in some of the samples within the Ag-Ag2Se-Cu2Se-Cu regime. The diameter of the whisker is about 200μm, and their lengths reach several centimeters after annealing for some days. There are three types of whiskers: Ag, Cu, and Ag+Cu. The Ag whiskers are formed in the Ag-rich region, while the Cu whiskers are formed in the Cu-rich region. Liquid miscibility gaps exist in the Ag-Se and Cu-Se binary systems, and they extend into the ternary Ag-Cu-Se system. The compositional range for whisker formation overlaps with that of the liquid miscibility gap. Analysis of the whiskers confirms that they are pushed out by stress, likely originating from annealing of the two regions of different compositions formed within the miscibility gap. |
