Abstract Scope |
Corrosion resistant metallic alloys, such as stainless steels, survive aggressive environments owing to their ability to form nanometer-scale, self-healing, protective passive oxide films. Historically, the compositional design of corrosion resistant alloys has been largely empirical. However, the emergence of more rigorous characterization and computational techniques have enabled new insights into the origins of passive film formation. In this talk, we will discuss how atomistic parameters like crystal structure, alloy content, and chemical short-range order (SRO) affect the aqueous passivation in binary alloys. We will present recent results on primary passivation in binary alloys, a percolation model of passivation, and highlight the importance of SRO. The crossover of 2D to 3D percolation behavior will also be presented, which can explain the critical amount of passivating component needed for primary passive film formation. This knowledge can be used to inform the design of the next generation of corrosion-resistant metallic alloys. |
