Abstract Scope |
Local microstructure modification using friction stir processing (FSP) is intended to improve formability. However, the improvement of formability is local. It is realized only in specific types of loading, and the reason needs to be better understood through the investigation of the heterogeneous microstructure’s local properties.
Formability is a function of local properties like yield stresses, strain hardening, and ductility, which vary across the three regions of FSPed components. In addition, ductility depends on stress triaxiality too. This study measured yield stress variation through indentation. The other properties were determined by calibrating the material properties in the simulation model to selected bending and tensile tests. Finally, the validity of the distribution of local properties was proven by comparing a limiting dome height forming test with its simulation. This progress made in this work will allow optimizing the FSP paths and achieving superior formability for a wide variety of components. |
