Abstract Scope |
Developing domestic supply chains for permanent magnets is essential for ensuring economic security, technological advancement, and environmental sustainability. Permanent magnets based on rare earth elements (REEs), like neodymium and dysprosium, are critical in high-tech and clean energy applications, including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and electronic devices. The global supply chain for these materials depends on a few countries, posing risks related to supply disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and price volatility. This talk explores research aimed at creating a domestic supply chain for high-performance permanent magnets from U.S.-sourced REEs. It explores the entire lifecycle of permanent magnet production, from mining and processing REEs to manufacturing and recycling magnets. Collaboration between government, industry, and academia is crucial in fostering innovation and competitiveness of domestic supply chains. MP Materials' mission is to restore the complete rare earth supply chain to the U.S. through vertically integrated operations, including mining, processing, magnet manufacturing, and recycling. |
