Abstract Scope Secondary melting or recycling of non-ferrous metals uses considerably less energy and produces significantly less greenhouse gases as compared to primary production routes. As the production of non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper continues to transition to the secondary melting route, the need to decarbonize these processes becomes more important. A significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is possible when converting the operations to use modern oxy-fuel burner technology. This paper presents data from industrial-scale demonstrations of smart oxy-fuel burner technology in secondary melting operations. The degree to which the carbon footprint of the operation can be reduced and the factors to be considered when transitioning to oxy-fuel burners from air-fuel burners are analyzed. Additionally, a techno-economic evaluation is presented as part of this discussion. These methods and know-how provide a practical route to advancing the decarbonization efforts and sustainability of recycling or secondary melting processes.
