Abstract Scope |
The exponential growth of Li-Ion Batteries (LIBs) in the electric vehicle market necessitates the establishment of effective end-of-life treatment technologies. This is crucial to prevent any negative impacts on the future supply of strategic elements. In the present study, the influence of production and pre-treatment conditions on LIB-based Black Mass (BM) during subsequent hydrometallurgical processing steps have been investigated. Various analytical techniques such as SEM-EDS, XRD, ICP-OES, PDA, LECO, and NMR were employed to characterize the different BM's material properties. The elements present in each BM were categorized, the particle aggregation evaluated, the particle size distribution established, and the total amount of carbon and traces of organic compounds determined. The outcomes of the study give valuable information on how system kinetics and particle surface area impact downstream processing. The present research is vital for developing efficient and sustainable methods for LIB recycling. |
