Abstract Scope |
The development of high-performance steels demands extensive studies on microstructure evolution during austenite conditioning and decomposition. Depending on steel chemistry and thermo-mechanical processing different austenite microstructures and states of alloying elements can be obtained which greatly affect the subsequent austenite decomposition and resulting transformation products. This complexity necessitates the development of robust tools that can efficiently evaluate a wide range of thermo-mechanical treatments and chemistries. In this work, an improved specimen design is proposed for laser ultrasonic studies to in-situ monitoring austenite grain growth, recrystallization, and decomposition in a single test at various heating rates, deformation conditions, and cooling rates. The results on selected low-carbon steels highlight laser ultrasonics as a promising technique to expedite the evaluation of modifications in thermo-mechanical processing paths and steel chemistries by high throughput in-situ measurements. |
