Abstract Scope |
The nitriding process results in the formation of a particularly hard layer on the surface of steels, due to the nitrogen ingress into the material. However, the mechanical integrity of this layer can be degraded by brief exposure to high temperatures inducing nitrogen diffusion. High speed nanoindentation mapping was performed on a martensitic nitrided steel to quantify such degradation. The sound material was first mapped using EBSD and nano-indentation, which allowed the influence of crystallographic texture to be decoupled from hardening directly induced by nitrogen supersaturation. This method made it possible to measure the nitrogen penetration gradient and the homogeneity of its distribution on a local scale. Finally, the same procedure was applied after aging the material for 2 minutes at high temperature. The results enabled us to quantify the changes in the mechanical performance of the nitrided layer, as well as the diffusion of nitrogen in the material. |
