Recent additive manufacturing studies have demonstrated non-equilibrium effects during the solidification of metallic alloys. Solute trapping can become significant during rapid solidification, which in turn influences microstructure length scales and, as a result, the properties of manufactured alloys. However, the effect of alloy chemical thermodynamics on solidification rates in multi-component systems remains poorly understood. In this work, we employ the finite interface dissipation phase field modeling framework to examine solidification kinetics in ternary alloys. Analytical and computational studies are used to systematically examine the influence of various transport coefficients and non-equilibrium effects on solidification rates. Our results quantitatively show that cross diffusion coefficients and non-equilibrium interfacial effects play non-trivial roles in solidification growth rates and solute redistribution around the advancing solid-liquid interface. In broader terms, our approach provides avenues to examine multi-component solidification during additive manufacturing. |
