Presentation Title Infection Resistant Surfaces with Long-term Antibiofilm Activity for Indwelling Medical Devices

Abstract Scope The long-term prevention of biofilm formation on the surface of indwelling medical devices remains a challenge. The presence of drug resistant bacteria further complicates the treatment. In this talk I describe novel substrate independent approaches to prevent bacterial colonization and biofilm prevention with long-term activity. Building on our research on hydrophilic antimicrobial surfaces, we have developed substrate independent coating whose antibiofilm activity is modulated by assembling silver nanoclusters and antimicrobial peptides on the surface. Optimal surfaces are obtained through a large-scale screening resulting in potent antimicrobial activity and zero bacterial adhesion over a month in presence of high load of diverse bacteria including drug resistant and difficult-to-kill strains. The surface coatings showed high biocompatibility and excellent antibiofilm prevention in vivo in diverse animal infection models.
