H-5: Enhancing Mechanical Properties of 3D-printed Composite Structures Inspired by Sea Sponge |

Abstract Scope |
The sea sponge’s unique skeletons possess exceptional buckling resistance. Researchers have proven the sponge's ability to withstand external compression and maintain structural integrity due to its diagonal reinforced struts. Prior research on sponge lattices focuses on a single material under quasi-static compression. Here, we aim to integrate the sponge’s skeleton into a composite structure and understand its mechanical responses under different loading conditions. Multi-material additive manufacturing methods are used to fabricate sponge-inspired designs. Both experimental and computational methods will be used to study the designs that are assembled in plies with various orientation angles, and their failure mechanism are probed and categorized. We hypothesize that the stiff and soft phase interaction will improve the interlocking mechanism, which results in higher strength and energy dissipation. Ultimately, we strive to deeply explore and promote the application of 3D printed materials in diverse fields such as automotive and aerospace. |
