Abstract Scope For biomedical applications zinc is a promising absorbable material. Additions of magnesium improve its strength, but its addition is limited to avoid intermetallic phases being detrimental to ductility. To influence and control the corrosion rate of such resorbable materials, they can be used in combination with adapted polymers, e.g. PLA. Using bulk material, only the surface can be covered. Open structures offer the possibility influencing the corrosion condition over time by filling the voids with a selected polymer. Therefore, a leaching technology with salt fractions between 0.5-2 mm was chosen. Starting with casting bars of approx. 20 mm diameter, the final geometry focused on was in the area of some mm in diameter. Reduction had been performed using different forming processes. Results of forming conditions and their boundaries and drawbacks in combination with a polymer filling will be discussed. Casting will be introduced by another presentation within this session.
