Abstract Scope |
Binder jetting is an additive manufacturing method that can produce geometrically complex shaped parts at an industrial scale. While it has advantages in resolution and not being limited by material optical properties over direct-ink-write and vat photopolymerization techniques, respectively, binder jetting of ceramics is often challenged in the final achievable density of parts due to the feedstock powder requirements. This presentation will discuss binder jetting of non-oxide ceramic materials with specific interest in densification methods beyond standard, solid-state sintering methods. Cemented tungsten carbide with cobalt binder (WC-Co), commonly used for wear-resistant applications, is investigated with binder jetting utilizing liquid phase cobalt as a binder phase for densification and hot isostatic pressing. An industrial scale AM method is presented, with density, microstructure, composition, and mechanical properties of the parts discussed. Additionally, binder jetting of silicon carbide will also be discussed, with infiltration of preceramic polymer precursors for densification being investigated. |
