Abstract Scope |
Understanding the effect of transmutation products, such as Rhenium (Re) and Osmium (Os) isotopes and the behavior of hydrogen in neutron-irradiated tungsten (W) is important in developing fusion plasma facing materials (PCMs). Transmutation products in single crystal W and W alloys subjected to shielded and unshielded neutron irradiation were studied using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Prior to ToF-SIMS analysis, specimens were prepared using focused ion beam (FIB). SIMS spectral analysis was used to determine levels of Re, Os, and hydrogen isotopic product in irradiated W. Furthermore, depth profiling was used to determine spatial distributions of transmuted products in irradiated W, enhancing information level. With reliable reference materials, ToF-SIMS can accurately quantify the concentrations of transmuted isotopes. Coupled with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT), this study provides further insights into the microstructural and compositional changes in neutron-irradiated W. |
