Abstract Scope |
Advanced nuclear systems require a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between radiation and corrosion, which is essential for informed material selections and safe deployment. To address this, we have developed a facility that enables simultaneous irradiation and corrosion experiments using a 3 MeV proton beam, integrated with a high-temperature liquid metal corrosion cell. Our experiments, conducted on SS316L at 675°C with and without simultaneous proton irradiation, indicate a potential acceleration of corrosion under irradiation conditions. Supported by characterization and statistical image analyses, we hypothesize that a change in wetting behavior may be responsible for the faster initiation of corrosion attack. Additionally, pre-implantation with helium and pre-irradiation with Fe ions, followed by simultaneous proton irradiation and corrosion, have significantly altered the corrosion behavior. We will also present our preliminary attempts at testing ceramic samples (SiC) with this system, highlighting the challenges encountered and the methods employed to address them. |
