Abstract Scope |
The use of Engineered Wood Products (EWP) for structural applications has grown rapidly in recent years. These new products have significant advantages over sawn timber but they introduce additional parameters that must be considered when using EWP for structural applications as well as add concerns of greater susceptibility to moisture and reduced fire performance compared to traditional sawn timber construction. This paper examines the issue of rolling shear failure in the transverse laminations of a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panel. Rolling shear in CLT panels is not well understood and design formulas have treated this topic very conservatively. In this paper, authors outline several potential techniques to reduce the effect of rolling shear in transverse laminations. The overall goal is to explore the techniques that will lead to CLT panels that are less susceptible to rolling shear failure and therefore capable of withstanding higher loads. |
