Abstract Scope |
The use of magnets in traction motors of hybrid and electric vehicles has led to a huge surge in demand for Nd-Fe-B magnets. The decrease in coercivity of the Nd-Fe-B magnet with increase in temperatures, makes the magnet unusable above 150°C. Decoration of grain boundary with non-ferromagnetic low-melting eutectic alloys (Eg. Nd-Cu using grain boundary diffusion process (GBDP), has been explored for enhancing coercivity of the magnet. Further, addition of Nb assists in restricting the growth of Nd2Fe14B grains during GBDP process. A correlative multiscale microstructural characterization involving TEM, TKD, APT at nano/near-atomic length scale was employed to study the microstructural evolution, crystallographic/structural information, and chemistry of nano-grains. The role of annealing treatment on the evolution of Nb clusters and precipitates will be presented and the influence of the precipitate distribution, size and morphology on the magnetic properties during GBDP will be discussed. |
