Abstract Scope |
Producing parts with engineered local properties through functional grading is an attractive capability of additive manufacturing (AM) beyond well-established capabilities such as geometric freedom, lightweighting through design optimization, and customization. The production of functional structures with properties that change over time when subject to external stimuli is also a nascent capability of AM. The combination of functional grading in functional materials has not been thoroughly investigated to unlock their full potential. Here, we exploit the extreme sensitivity of the mechanical and functional response of metallic shape memory alloys (SMAs) and high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs) to composition and microstructure––in turn facilitated by local process control in AM––to enable the design of new parts with completely different mechanical responses at different locations, and capable of actuating at different temperatures in a single monolithic structure made of nickel-titanium and nickel-titanium-hafnium shape memory alloys fabricated using laser powder bed fusion. |
