Abstract Scope |
If Inconel 718 can be produced phase-pure with fine grain structure as-deposited, then post-processing of the large columnar grains generated in Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM)-produced Inconel can be minimized. To that end, actively cooled depositions of IN718 were produced using a DC MIG welder integrated with a 3-axis CNC mill in an open environment. Grain formation, minimal gross defects, and absence of oxidation in as-printed specimens showed promise and encouraged further study. A state-of-the-art Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) welder was integrated with a 4-axis CNC mill, producing compression and tensile specimens in both as-processed and heat-treated forms. Phase analysis revealed all expected significant peaks, and EDS revealed widespread intermetallic phase formations of Ti, Nb, and Al. Stable weld pool geometry promoted the deposition of complex 3-dimensional structures, with additional cooling and shielding-gas delivery showing promise for additional control of oxides and undesirable phase formations. |
