Abstract Scope |
In Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) based technology, approximately 20-30% of powder feedstock end up in storage after multiple cycles of sieving and reclaiming. However, the deviation of particle size distribution of the reclaimed powders can lead to build defects and failures if used for the subsequent production of metallic parts. At present, there are no feasible ways to recycle these out-of-spec powders and are being stored, which leads to storage-related issues and increase safety and security risks in manufacturing facilities. Here, we attempted to address this challenge by developing a semi continuous technology by utilizing low process temperatures and power ultrasonics to locally process metal powder into pellet. The effect of processing temperature and time on the porosity and microstructure of the consolidated samples has been studied. Results from this work have implications for the circular economy in the metal additive manufacturing sector. |
