Abstract Scope |
Zr-based alloys are currently used for various applications in the nuclear industry due to their irradiation stability and mechanical properties. Newly developed Zr-based alloys typically have Nb as a major alloying element. In the present study, we systematically examine the effect of Nb addition on the oxidation behavior of Zr alloys. Binary Zr-Nb alloys with various hypoeutectoid, eutectoid, and hypereutectoid compositions were produced using an electric arc furnace. These samples were tested to determine their oxidation kinetics in air at temperatures between 300°C and 500°C using a thermobalance. Results from the tests with pure Zr and Nb samples helped establish a baseline to compare the oxidation behavior of Zr-Nb binary alloys. Oxides developed under the tested conditions were characterized for their composition and morphology using XRD and SEM/EDS. The effect of Nb addition on the oxidation behavior of Zr-Nb alloys will be discussed. |
