Presentation Title Engineering Grain Boundary Energy with Thermal Profiles to Control Grain Growth in SrTiO3

Abstract Scope Abnormal grain growth (AGG) leads to a bimodal microstructure and, therefore, heterogeneous bulk properties. Previous studies have shown that thermal history influences AGG. However, the reasons why thermal history affects AGG are unknown, limiting our ability to control AGG efficiently. Modifying thermal profiles has been shown to alter the grain boundary (GB) energy distributions. So, this study evaluates the effect of different thermal history profiles on the GB energy and AGG in SrTiO3 at 1425°C. The different microstructure’s grain size and GB energy are characterized by electron-backscattered diffraction microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The results show that the thermal profile which led to the microstructure having fewer high-energy GBs and a narrow GB energy distribution experienced less AGG and a slower matrix grains growth rate at 1425°C. These findings suggest that GB energy engineering through thermal profile modification can be used to slow down growth rate and prevent AGG.
