Accurate characterization of the mechanical behavior in plane strain tension is of critical importance when designing sheet metal forming operations. The plane strain condition represents an extremum of the yield surface where the major stress is highest and formability is lowest. The use of notched tensile test specimens can produce plane strain conditions in the center of the specimen but there is a severe stress and strain gradient across the gauge width that complicates analysis. In the present work, a novel methodology is proposed using simple anisotropic, associated yield functions to exploit the stress and strain gradients within notch tests and characterize the constitutive response from uniaxial tension to plane strain. The methodology is demonstrated for two representative automotive alloys and compared to finite element simulations. This approach can provide accurate estimates of the yield behavior in tensile stretching, reducing the number of characterization tests required for yield function calibration. |
