Abstract Scope |
A common alloy system used for automotive production is the 6xxx series of alloys, which readily form complex shapes via extrusion and have a high specific strength. Currently small additions of Cr and Mn are added to improve recrystallization resistance and decrease peripheral coarse grain growth during the extrusion process via dispersoid formation. It is proposed that if similar concentrations of Sc and Zr are added to replace Cr and Mn dispersoids; there will be improved recrystallization resistance and a decrease in the depth of peripheral coarse grain growth. These microstructural changes will cause an increase in the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength in a peak-aged extrudate compared to an alloy with Cr and Mn dispersoids. |
