Abstract Scope |
Reversible Solid Oxide Electrochemical Cells (RSOEC) with nickelate-based oxygen electrodes and Ni/YSZ fuel electrodes have been subjected to long term operation in the electrolyzer (SOEC) mode, as well as periodic switching between solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and SOEC operational modes. Microstructural analysis of the cells has been carried out by SEM, TEM, XRD and FIB/SEM-based 3-D reconstruction to quantify interfacial reactions and cation migration in the air electrodes, Ni loss/migration and changes in the percolated Ni phase in the fuel electrodes, as well as grain coarsening in air and fuel electrodes. These microstructural changes will be correlated to changes in the electrochemical performance of these cells. Strategies to limit microstructural changes and performance degradation will also be discussed. |
