Abstract Scope |
Precise understanding of microstructural evolution is critical to sustainable use of Ni-based turbine disk alloys across several regimes of the material life cycle. Heteroepitaxial recrystallization (HeRX)—a low energy barrier recrystallization mechanism where a coherent γ forms on the primary γ’ particle—must be fully understood to improve service-life predictions, but also provides a potential avenue for the development of targeted repairs at the microstructural level. In this study, the role of the residual strain distribution around γ’ particles in HeRX is discussed, particularly in its role in the nucleation frequency and apparent directionality of the novel recrystallization process. Potential uses of the HeRX mechanism to reduce energy input in turbine disk manufacturing and repair are discussed. |
