Abstract Scope |
Expanding of the science of alloys has proven to be foundational to the advancement of materials, processes, and structures engineering (MPSE), especially for structural materials. While materials developers often begin their quest having only notional insights into engineering designs or materials processes, because of materials science research, they nearly always have insights into composition classes and behavior mechanisms that may be exploited, historical weaknesses within selected alloy systems, or even unknown domains that require exploration. Further, there are now diverse suites of investigative tools, both experimental and computational, available to the material developer. For this presentation, the authors examine aspects of their efforts at materials development, to glean insights into how development efforts were approached, limitations encountered, and present-day advancements to tools, techniques, and methods that permit unprecedented explorations and development for MPSE. |
