Abstract Scope |
We proposed a novel explanation to describe the yield point elongation (YPE) in ultrafine-grained medium Mn transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel with austenite-ferrite dual phase microstructure. YPE can be attributed to heterogeneous deformation of constituent phases. It is observed that dislocation glide in ferrite and austenite to martensite transformation (TRIP) and formation of twin in austenite phase during deformation (TWIP) contributes to YPE. Transmission electron microscopy based microstructure analysis revealed dislocation structure in ferrite and twin formation in austenite during YPE. X-ray diffraction study revealed that austenite to martensite phase transformation took place during YPE. The reason for observing both TRIP and TWIP is attributed to differences in Mn (and C) concentration in fine austenite grains which changes the stacking fault energy (SFE) and thereby influences the plasticity mechanisms. Both TWIP and TRIP effect has not been observed in the past YPE studies carried out in medium Mn steels. |
