Abstract Scope |
Hydrogen embrittlement in titanium alloys, triggered by hydride formation, poses a significant shortcoming in their usage for structural applications. Our study introduces a new surface treatment approach to control hydride distribution in α/β titanium alloys. We found that hydrides predominantly form under the specially treated surfaces when the treated and non-treated surfaces on the same part are hydrogen-charged simultaneously. This selective formation of hydrides effectively protects the non-treated regions from embrittlement. We substantiated these findings with in-situ hydrogen charging experiments to observe hydride growth. Additionally, tensile tests on specimens with treated surface patches at the grip area showed no embrittlement after cathodic hydrogen charging, unlike specimens without such patches. The underlying mechanisms and the potential of other surface enhancement techniques to achieve similar effects will be discussed during the talk. |
