Abstract Scope |
Carbon capture using enhanced weathering of ultramafic alkaline earth silicates has been proposed as one of the primary methods for meeting Carbon Shot goals set out by the US DOE. Utilizing this technology to achieve Gtons of CO2 captured per year requires incorporating these materials into enormous surface areas such as farmland and construction materials. In this work, we show how ceramics can help meet these goals by incorporating alkaline earth silicates into existing supply chains such as bricks, pavers, tiles, and glasses. As an example, incorporating commercial Forsterite materials into clay based products and existing extrusion forming techniques can improve the forming process while maintaining green densities and throughput. Sintering of the formed products using existing tunnel kiln profiles preserves the Forsterite phase. When similar processes and materials are incorporated into existing product lines worldwide, this technology can meet approximately 25% of the Carbon Shot goals. |
