Abstract Scope Low-Sc (< 0.2wt.%) alloys warrant attention due to the high cost of Sc, which limits the broader application of these alloys. This research investigates the Al-3%Mg-0.1%Sc, Al-5%Mg-0.1%Sc and Al-10%Mg-0.1%Sc samples manufactured through directional solidification. The aim was to identify and comprehend both the Sc-particles resulting from solidification and those that formed subsequently. SEM-EDS and TEM analyses revealed that either submicrometric and nanometric particles constitute the microstructure. The growth of the ternary α-Al+AlFe+β-Al3Mg2 eutectic was identified in the intercellular/interdendritic regions of the alloys. The β-Al3Mg2 phase was detected in the micrographs of the three Al-Mg-Sc alloys, with more detailed observation in the fracture region of the Al-3%Mg-0.1% Sc alloy sample. The Al3Sc phase was identified forming isolated primary clusters during solidification in the Al-5%Mg-0.1%Sc and Al-10%Mg-0.1%Sc alloys. Nanometric Al3Sc particles with irregular shapes and dimensions smaller than 10 nm were identified in the Al-5% Mg-0.1% Sc alloy solidified at 0.7K/s
