Abstract Scope |
The 5f-electron states in actinides exhibit a dual nature due to competing interactions and significant spin-orbit coupling. These interactions result in a variety of complex electronic and magnetic phenomena, including non-collinear antiferromagnetic ordering, multipolar ordering, topological superconductivity, charge density waves, and mixed valence states. Actinide binary oxides and chalcogenides provide a relatively simpler platform to explore these intricate behaviors. This presentation will focus on the challenges associated with the crystal synthesis of actinide oxides and chalcogenides, as well as their detailed crystallographic structures. The focus will be given to spectroscopy and magnetic property analysis of these materials, with an emphasis on the unique effects and the often pronounced anisotropic characteristics attributed to van der Waals layers in actinide chalcogenides. |
