Abstract Scope |
Electric fields have been shown to have a significant impact on the densification and grain growth behavior of materials. In this study, we investigated the effect of electric fields on the atomic and electronic structures of twist and tilt grain boundaries in SrTiO3. Specifically, we conducted dedicated bicrystal experiments and found that applying electric fields across grain boundary planes can alter their structures. Moreover, we observed that the direction of the electric field relative to the grain boundary plane influences the changes in atomic and electronic structures. Our more recent studies focused on tilt grain boundaries in SrTiO3 that were annealed in the presence of externally applied electrostatic fields. We will present our findings on the impact of electric fields on the grain boundary core structures and interfacial bonding. We will also discuss the interplay between the externally applied electric field and the space charge configuration of the grain boundary.
